Among Dostoevsky's numerous Petersburg addresses, the building on the corner of Kuznechny Lane and Dostoevsky Street (formerly Yamskaya) holds particular significance. The writer moved there with his family in the beginning of October 1878 and was to reside there until the day of his death, January 28, 1881. It was in this house that many of Dostoevsky's contemporaries were to visit him, and his last novel, The Brothers Karamazov, was written

The exhibition of the museum restores the interior of the world famous writer's latest apartment. The exhibits are the private belongings of Dostoevsky and his books. Dostoevsky Memorial Museum occupies the basement and two floors of the house.

Whenever Dostoevsky rented an apartment in St Petersburg, it was located so that at least one window should have a view of a church. Dostoevsky’s apartment at 5 Kuznechny pereulok (lane) too has a view of the Our Lady of Vladimir Cathedral which stands on Vladimirskaya square. In the drawing by the modern artist, Boris G.Kostygov its chapel at the corner of the square can be seen.

In the rooms of the apartment one can feel the atmosphere of harmony and family happiness which were granted to Feodor Dostoevsky in the last years of his hard life.
This simple, completely ordinary Petersburg apartment building, devoid of distinctive architectural features, has today become one of the most popular attractions in the city precisely because it was there that Dostoevsky lived and died.
